Set up an organisation
Updated 16 Aug 2026 · iOS, Android, Web
An organisation is a named group of people — usually your company or team — that you set up once and then reuse. Instead of inviting colleagues to every Space one by one, you attach the organisation to a Space and everyone in it gets access, including people who join the organisation later.
How do I create an organisation?
- Open Settings and go to Organisations.
- Choose New organisation.
- Enter an Organisation name and confirm.
You become the organisation's owner. You can belong to more than one organisation at a time — one per client, for example.
How do people join?
Two ways:
- Invite by email — add people from the organisation's member list, the same way as Space invites. People without an account are added the first time they sign in.
- Auto-join by email domain — anyone signing in with your company's email domain can be offered membership automatically. See Let teammates join by email domain.
What do the roles mean?
Every organisation member has one of three roles:
| Role | What it means |
|---|---|
| Owner | Created the organisation (or received ownership). Can transfer ownership and Delete organisation. There is exactly one owner. |
| Admin | Helps manage the organisation. |
| Member | Belongs to the organisation and gets access to every Space attached to it. |
All three roles get the same access to attached Spaces — roles govern managing the organisation, not what you can do with shared recordings. For recording-level permissions, see Who can see and edit what?
How do I transfer ownership?
Open the member list, pick the person, and choose Transfer ownership. The confirmation states the effect plainly: "They become the owner and you become an admin." There's always exactly one owner, so this is how you hand an organisation over before leaving a company.
How do I rename or delete an organisation?
- Rename organisation is in the organisation's settings.
- Delete organisation is there too, owner-only. Deleting doesn't touch anyone's recordings: "Members keep their own recordings. Folders shared with this organisation stop being shared through it." People who were also invited to a Space directly (not only through the organisation) keep their access.
Can I leave an organisation?
Yes — Leave organisation from the organisation's page. You lose access to Spaces you only had through the organisation. Recordings you contributed to those Spaces stay there, and your own library is untouched.
If you delete your Canto account while owning an organisation, ownership passes automatically to its longest-standing admin or member; if you were the only person in it, the organisation is deleted.
