Track action items across meetings

Canto pulls every commitment, task, and follow-up out of a recording into a checklist in the notes. Each item names its owner and due date when one was mentioned, and the checked-off state is shared: when anyone with access to the recording marks an item done, everyone sees it done.

Where do action items come from?

They are extracted from the transcript when the AI writes the notes — anything a speaker committed to, with the owner set to that speaker's label and the due date as it was spoken ("by Friday" stays "by Friday"). If nothing was committed to, the list is empty; Canto doesn't invent tasks.

How do the checkboxes work?

Tick an item to mark it complete. On iOS and Android the item's menu offers Mark as done and Mark as not done; on the web you click the checkbox directly.

Checkbox state lives on the recording, not on your device — it syncs to everyone the recording is shared with. That makes the notes a live task list for the meeting: one person closing out an item closes it for the whole group.

Can I edit or reorder items?

On the web, each item has an edit control and can be dragged to reorder. Your edits survive until the notes are regenerated. Editing the summary as a whole is covered in Edit or regenerate a summary and title.

How do I see open items across all my meetings?

Use the global Ask chat. It reads across everything you've recorded, so questions like these work:

• What action items do I have?
• What action items am I committed to?
• Who have I promised to follow up with?

Can I get action items as a document?

Yes — the Views tab has a fixed Action items view ("Every commitment with owner and deadline") that generates a markdown task list with timestamps, ready to copy or export. See Turn a meeting into minutes or an email.

FAQ

Do action items count against my plan?

Extraction is part of the automatic summary and doesn't cost anything extra. Asking about them in chat uses your AI chat allowance — 500 / mo on the free plan. Chat on recordings shared with you doesn't count against your allowance.

An obvious task is missing

The AI only extracts commitments it can point to in the transcript. If the words were mumbled or mistranscribed, fix the transcript line and regenerate, or add the item yourself by editing the notes.
