Delete your Canto account
Updated 16 Aug 2026 · iOS, Android, Web
You can delete your Canto account from inside the app on iOS, Android, or the web. Deletion is immediate and permanent: as the confirmation says, "This permanently deletes your account and every recording, transcript, and chat. This cannot be undone."
How do I delete my account in the app?
- Open Canto on iOS, Android, or the web.
- Go to Account (the profile icon), then Delete account.
- Confirm. On the web the confirm button is Delete everything, under the warning "All your recordings, transcripts, and data will be permanently erased. This cannot be undone."
Your account and data are erased right away — there is no grace period or recovery window.
What gets deleted?
Deleting your account permanently removes:
- Your audio recordings and their transcripts.
- Titles, notes, tags, speaker names, and AI-generated summaries and documents.
- Your chat history and search data.
- Folders you own, and your memberships in folders and organisations.
- Your account record and sign-in identity.
Backups and logs that may briefly contain residual data are rotated out within 30 days. Nothing is kept beyond what the law requires. See the privacy policy for the full retention picture.
What happens to shared content?
- Recordings that other people contributed to folders you own remain their data — deleting your account doesn't delete their work.
- If you own an organisation, ownership transfers to its longest-standing member so the rest of the team doesn't lose access.
- Content you shared into other people's spaces is removed along with your account.
If you want teammates to keep something specific you recorded, move or re-share it before deleting.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play — those renew from your store account, not your Canto account. Cancel in the store first: see Change or cancel your subscription.
What if I can't open the app?
If you've lost access to the app or the account you signed in with, you can request deletion by email. Write from the address associated with your Canto account, with the subject "Delete my Canto account". Canto verifies ownership, deletes the account within 30 days, and confirms when it's done. Contact details are on the support page.
FAQ
Can I get my data back after deleting?
No. Deletion cannot be undone, and there is no restore-from-backup option. Export anything you want to keep first — see Export notes as PDF or Markdown and Download your audio.
Is signing out the same as deleting?
No. Sign out removes local copies from that device but leaves your account and cloud data intact; you get everything back by signing in again. Deletion erases the account itself.
