# Organize recordings into Spaces

> Create Spaces (folders) for projects, clients, or meeting series — with an emoji, folder notes, and their own AI chat. Called folders on iOS and Android.

Spaces are Canto's folders: named collections of recordings for a project, a client, or a recurring meeting. A Space can be private, shared with specific people, or shared with your whole organisation — and each one has its own AI chat over everything inside it.

One naming note up front: the web sidebar calls them **Spaces**; the iOS and Android apps call the same thing folders (**Folders**, **New folder**). They are the same objects, synced across all your devices.

## How do I create a Space?

- **On the web** — use **New folder** in the sidebar, name it, and it appears under your workspace.
- **On iOS and Android** — from the folders area, choose **New folder** and enter a name in the **Folder name** field.

You can create a folder from a recording too: **Add to folder** on any recording offers **New folder** in the picker. And Canto offers to create one for you when it spots a recurring meeting — see [File recurring meetings automatically](https://usecanto.com/help/organize/series-auto-filing/).

## What can a Space hold?

- **Recordings** — added from your library, filed automatically, or [recorded directly into the folder](https://usecanto.com/help/organize/move-recordings/). A recording can live in many Spaces at once.
- **Folder notes** — standalone notes that belong to the Space rather than to a recording. **New note** starts one.
- **An emoji** — give each folder an emoji so it's recognisable at a glance (**Emoji** on the folder; **Remove emoji** to clear it).
- **Its own chat** — see [Chat with everything in a Space](https://usecanto.com/help/ai/folder-chat/).

## What are the sections in the web sidebar?

- **My Notes** — your personal workspace: your recordings and the Spaces you created.
- **Organisation spaces** — under **Spaces**, folders shared with an organisation; everyone in the org has access, current and future members. See [Org-wide Spaces](https://usecanto.com/help/sharing/org-spaces/).
- **Shared with me** — Spaces and recordings other people shared with you directly.

If you belong to several organisations, each appears as its own workspace, and **Arrange workspaces** lets you drag them into the order you prefer (the order is saved per browser).

## Does a Space contain the recordings themselves?

No — membership is a reference, not a move. Deleting a folder doesn't touch its recordings: "Recordings stay in your library; only the folder and its sharing go away." The exception is what deletion undoes: people who could see recordings only through that folder's sharing lose that access.

## How do I share a Space?

**Share folder** adds people by email, or shares with your organisation. Members can read and chat with everything inside. Details and roles: [Share a Space with others](https://usecanto.com/help/sharing/share-a-space/).

## FAQ

### How many recordings fit in a Space?

There's no fixed cap on folder size or folder count on any plan.

### Can I nest Spaces?

No — Spaces are a flat list. Use [tags and date filters](https://usecanto.com/help/organize/tags/) to slice further within one.
