# Edit or regenerate a summary and title

> Rename a recording, edit the generated notes as markdown, revert to the AI version, and what regenerating does to your manual changes.

Everything the AI writes is a starting point: you can rename the recording, rewrite the notes in markdown, or override individual pieces like the overview and single action items. Clearing your edits brings the generated version back, and regenerating replaces the notes wholesale.

## How do I rename a recording?

Tap the title — it shows **Tap to rename** — and type a new one, or use **Rename recording** in the recording's menu. A title you set yourself sticks: Canto only writes AI titles over default or calendar-seeded titles, so regeneration won't overwrite your rename.

## How do I edit the notes?

Choose **Edit summary** on the recording's notes. The notes open as markdown — headings, bullets, and task lists all work. Save and your version is what everyone with access sees, marked **Edited**.

Your edit replaces the whole summary body. For smaller changes there are per-item overrides:

- The overview line can be edited on its own.
- Individual action items can be edited and reordered on the web — see [Track action items across meetings](https://usecanto.com/help/ai/action-items/).

## How do I get the AI version back?

- On the web, choose **Revert to generated summary**.
- Anywhere, clearing your edited text and saving reverts to the generated notes — the AI version is kept underneath your edit, never deleted.

## How do I regenerate the notes?

If the AI pass failed, the recording shows an **AI failed — retry** chip — tap it and the pipeline runs again on the existing transcript. Regeneration also runs automatically after [retrying transcription](https://usecanto.com/help/transcription/retry-transcription/), since new transcript text needs new notes.

> Regenerating discards manual changes: the edited summary, edited overview, action-item edits and ordering, and all checkbox state are reset, because every item is re-extracted from scratch. Your typed notes and the recording title you set are kept — typed notes are actually used as the outline for the new summary.

## What do others see?

Edits are shared. On a recording that's shared with you or with a Space, your saved edit updates the notes for everyone with access, the same way checkbox state is shared. See [Who can do what on shared content?](https://usecanto.com/help/sharing/permissions-reference/)

## FAQ

### Does editing or regenerating cost anything?

No. Summaries and their regeneration are part of transcription, not metered like chat or template runs.

### The AI overwrote my title

That shouldn't happen for titles you typed. Titles that came from the calendar event (a seeded meeting title) are treated as replaceable, so the AI may swap in a more descriptive one — rename manually if you want it fixed.
